Book Review
The book describes stories of a few seemingly ordinary and simple women, who showed exemplary courage and strength of mind when faced with adverse situations. These women come from all strata of life. Despite the differences in their age, class, caste and financial circumstances, the common factor shared by all these women is their unflinching determination and courage to combat adversity. Be it young Afsana, who stood up to her brother to save the lives of her parents or Vasudhatai, who got over the demise of loved ones to look forward towards life with optimism and also provided support to other women like her. The author met most of these exemplary women while working for and visiting various social organizations for the needy women and was impressed by their sheer determination and positive attitude. In the book, the author further compares these women in contrast to those women who, while facing adversity, were unable to take the appropriate decision, were swayed by emotions rather than rational thinking and thus allowed themselves to be a victim of the circumstances. In addition, in the book, the author stresses the importance of social organizations that provide help to needy women to make them self-sufficient. The author notes that education and empowerment of women will play a key role in making them independent, assertive and believing in self. In summary, the book is a thought-provoking and enlightening read about a few ordinary women with extraordinary courage.
